Melanie Lee, BSc Hons, PhD, FMedSci
Chairman
Dr Lee gained her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology at York University. Her academic career, based in London, started with her PhD with Dr Robin Holliday at the National Institute for Medical Research and two post-doctoral fellowships with Dr Jean Beggs at the CRC Group at Imperial College and Sir Paul Nurse at the ICRF. Dr Lee spent 10 years at Glaxo and Glaxo Wellcome specialising in and leading the G-protein coupled receptor molecular pharmacology department. In 1998 Dr Lee joined Celltech as Executive Research Director. Celltech was subsequently acquired by UCB where Dr Lee is the Executive Vice President, Research and Development.
Dr Lee joined the board of ICRT in 2001. When CRC and ICRF merged, she played a key role in the strategic planning of the business model for the CRUK’s technology transfer company and in the selection of the new Board for CRT and of Harpal Kumar as CEO. She became Chairman of CRT in 2003.
Mr David Newbigging OBE
Appointed 1 October 2002, b 19.01.1934. Mr Newbigging was Chairman from 1 October 2002 to 13 February 2003 when he handed over to Dr. Melanie Lee but remained as a Director.
He is currently Chairman of Cancer Research UK and Synesis Life Limited. He was Chairman of Talbot Holdings Limited until July 2007 and Chairman of Friends Provident plc until May 2005. Until April 2007 he was also a director of Merrill Lynch & Co Inc in New York, and until April 2006 he was a director of PACCAR Inc in Bellevue, Washington. He has just recently been appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Limited.
His early career was spent in Asia where he worked for 30 years for the Jardine, Matheson Group of which he was Chairman and Chief Executive for 9 years before relocating to the UK in 1984. In Hong Kong he was a member of the Executive and Legislative Councils and Chairman or Director of several publicly listed companies. Former appointments in the UK include Chairman of Rentokil Group plc, Equitas Holdings Limited and Thistle Hotels plc.
His non-business interests include being a Trustee of National Crimebeat. He was Chairman of the Council of the Mission to Seafarers until December 2006, he is a former Chairman of the Wiltshire Community Foundation and was High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 2003/04.
Dr Andy Richards
Dr Andy Richards is a biotechnology entrepreneur and investor. His current business activity focuses on growing successful biotechnology and healthcare technology companies. He is currently a director of Vectura , Biowisdom, VASTox, Theradeas, Babraham Bioscience Technology, Aitua and is Chairman of Altacor and Pharmakodex. He was a founder of Chiroscience, one of Europe’s most successful biotech companies, and an executive director through to the merger with Celltech in 1999. In addition, he is a director of the Bioindustry Association (BIA) a founder member of the Cambridge Angels, and an advisor to Toscana Life Sciences. He joined the Board of CRT in August 2003.
Dr J. Barrie Ward
Dr J Barrie Ward was Chief Executive Officer of KuDOS Pharmaceuticals Limited from 1999 until January 2006 when the company was acquired by AstraZeneca. KuDOS was focussed on the discovery and development of inhibitors of DNA repair as new treatments for cancer. Prior to this appointment he was Chairman and CEO of Virus Research Institute Inc., which in 1998 merged with T-Cell Sciences Inc. to form AVANT Immunotherapeutics Inc. Dr Ward is currently Chairman of the AVANT Board of Directors. He is also Chairman of the Boards of Directors of Onyvax Limited and CellCentric Limited and a director of Biotica Technology Limited. From 1984-94 Dr Ward served as Director of the Microbiology Division of Glaxo Research and Development, with responsibility for infectious disease research. Dr Ward holds a BSc and a PhD in microbial biochemistry from the University of Bath.
Harpal S Kumar MA, MEng, MBA
Harpal Kumar is the Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, and former Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Research Technology. He gained a Masters in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge and an MBA as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School. After a brief period working as a research scientist with the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Harpal worked for four years in the London office of McKinsey and Co, specialising in advising pharmaceutical clients on strategic issues. He then became CEO of The Papworth Trust, which focuses on pioneering rehabilitation and housing services for people with acquired and congenital disabilities.
Harpal left Papworth in 1997 to become founding CEO of Nexan Group, a venture capital-backed medical device company, creating and marketing novel cardio-respiratory monitoring technologies to reduce premature mortality in patients with congestive heart failure. Harpal joined CRT in October 2002 to effect the merger of the former technology transfer companies of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and Cancer Research Campaign and to create a new strategy and vision for the combined company. He became Chief Operating Officer of Cancer Research UK in July 2004 and subsequently Chief Executive Officer in April 2007. Harpal is a Board Member of the National Cancer Research Institute and Chairman of the Gray Cancer Research Trust.
Keith Blundy PhD, MBA
Keith joined Cancer Research Technology in 1998 following ten years’ experience in R&D management and business development in agricultural biotechnology. He holds a BSc in Genetics and a PhD from the John Innes Institute, was a Fulbright Scholar during post-doctoral study in the US and has an MBA from London Business School. Keith was formerly a director of KuDOS Pharmaceuticals and Chroma Therapeutics.
Clive Stanway PhD
Clive is responsible for the research and development activity of CRT. CRT’s laboratory comprises staff who are skilled in molecular and cellular biology, drug discovery, early pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. Prior to the formation of CRT, he was Director of Project Development for Imperial Cancer Research Technology and previously worked leading teams in drug discovery at Prolifix and Xenova. Clive is a graduate of Nottingham University (BSc) and Imperial College (PhD) and worked as a postdoctoral researcher for 9 years in several laboratories at Oxford University.
Phil L'Huillier PhD, MBA
Phil has 15 years experience in the biotech/pharma industry, in R&D, IP management, licensing & partnering and corporate development. Prior to joining CRT, Phil headed up licensing at BioFocus Discovery Ltd, an AIM-listed integrated early stage drug discovery company. Prior to BioFocus, Phil was CSO and more recently CEO of ProBio Inc, a US specialty IP commercialisation company involved in international licensing and partnering in the Life Sciences sectors, prior to its sale to Pharming Group NV. He has also been a consultant to industry advising clients on R&D and commercialisation strategies, and has worked across several continents, including North America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Phil holds an MBA, and a PhD in cellular and molecular biology and is a Director of Hybrid Systems Ltd.
